Welcome to Mike Ward's Old Town Kingman Origins
Kingman — The best kept secret in Arizona
Kingman Arizona is a great place to live. If you are planning a move, or looking for a place to retire, you would be wise to add Kingman AZ to your list of places to investigate. There are many reasons why I say that Kingman AZ is a great place to live. We have all of the conveniences of a large city without the problems: traffic jams, high crime and high prices. In addition to the steady growth and modernization that has taken place in recent years, Kingman has maintained its small town appeal. It is easy to appreciate our sense of community when you watch one of the many parades that take place throughout the year, or when attending the county fair or buying cookies at a local fundraiser.
Situated in the high desert at an altitude of 3,500 feet, the air is clear and fresh. The winters are cold but it only snows a few times and the snow rarely lasts for more than a day. The weather starts to warm up in July and the hot weather remains through September, although it can be hot during those months we are usually 10 to 15 degrees cooler than Phoenix, Lake Havasu and Bullhead City.
There is nothing more beautiful than an Arizona sunrise, unless, of course, it is an Arizona Sunset.
We are conveniently located: San Diego is three hours away, Las Vegas is two hours away, Flagstaff and Sedona are three and four hours away and Phoenix is four hours away. If you don't feel like driving to any of those places, Laughlin is only thirty traffic free minutes from Kingman.
Recreation is close at hand in Kingman. Several lakes are within an easy drive for fishing, boating and camping. There are several great skiing destinations in Arizona, and one destination that draws people from all over the world The Grand Canyon is only two hours away. The state abounds with historic places, Native American culture and cultural events of multitudinous variety. Add to this bounty, a terrific school system, a local extension of the University of Arizona, the many personal freedoms afforded to people living in Arizona, low housing prices, and a mountain resort, restaurant and camp grounds located fifteen minutes away in the Hualapai Mountains, and you have a great place to live — Kingman The best kept secret in Arizona.
Kingman has an interesting past. It started out as home to many Native American Tribes, was explored by many groups including Spanish Priests and many military groups, it became a mining and cattle ranching area and grew slowly into the thriving, modern community of today. Arizona is celebrating the 100 year anniversary of becoming a State in 1912. Before becoming the 48th state, Arizona was organized as a territory three times: once by the Arizonans in 1860, once by the CONFEDERATE Congress in 1862, and finally in 1862 in a push to ultimately become a state.¹ Arizona has had a varied and colorful past full of interesting and courageous characters. Arizona is still very much the WILD WEST, and it isn't unusual to see a cowboy in full western garb - including a sidearm - shopping at our local Wal-Mart.
This Website is devoted to exploring that history and explaining the present.
